07-02-08 - Trapped man with heart condition provided life-saving medicine

The big wet almost claimed a life yesterday after a man in Amamoor was left stranded on his property when rising creeks left him without access to town and the life-saving medicine he needed.

The Brisbane-based man, who has a hobby farm and has been coming to the area for more than 20 years, was caught out when the creeks rose swiftly and covered the five road crossings between him and town with between half-a-metre and a metre of rushing water.

The 68-year-old has a heart a condition and the situation could have been fatal without access to to the life-saving drugs.

Fortunately, the ENERGEX Community Rescue Helicopter was able to get to the Amamoor Creek property quickly.

Rescue Chopper pilot John Hodges located the property and hovered 20 metres above the ground while crewman Dan King lowered the medicine to the man.

"I haven't seen the creeks rise that fast since the 1980s and unfortunately we got caught," the man said.

"The creeks are still impassable right now and with the forecast for more rain, it might be for some time yet."
